Tips
Recruiting
the best candidate:
When filling an important position
within your organization, you want to hire the
best talent in the region, not just the most talented
person reading the want ads or posting their resume
on the Internet career sites. Here are some helpful
tips on finding and obtaining the best candidate.
- Ask
yourself, "Why would someone want this position?
Is there a good reason for them to leave their
current position for ours?" What are those reasons?
- Know
what today's employee is interested in:
- Money
- Advancement
- Fast
growing company
- Introduction
to new technology or new industry
- Options/Equity
- Manager
they can learn from
- Company/Product
or service they can believe in
- Flexible
work schedule
- Develop
a detailed job description
- Be
prepared to "sell" your opportunity. With new
and exciting companies popping up all over the
region, be prepared to compete for the candidate
you want.
- Be
proactive. Develop a list of competitors you
would be interested in recruiting from.
- Select
a reputable search firm to confidentially represent
your company in finding these talented individuals.
- Act
in a timely fashion. The best talent will make
well thought out decisions. They will not rush
to a decision but they will expect timely feedback.
Making
the offer:
Money
is not the only thing being considered by the
candidate. Make sure to cover all the bases with
enthusiasm. Some things to consider when making
an offer:
- Don't
be cheap. Make the best offer possible and let
the candidate know that you have done so.
-
Do not analyze what the candidate is making
but more so, what you feel the job is worth.
- Spend
as much time discussing the growth and upward
mobility within the company as you do discussing
compensation.
- Mention
your enthusiasm for the company and where it
is going.
- Whenever
time permits, make the offer face to face.
